So … December 30 … New Year’s Eve Eve … can you believe it? It doesn’t seem like that long ago that we were welcoming in 2011 in the hopes of a fresh and happy new year. I, personally, had a great 2011 … but a great many other people didn’t have the best year ever so … here we are, hopeful again for a better year to come. I’m always hesitant to succumb to making New Year’s Resolutions but, invariably, I almost always do make them. I may not talk about them publicly but within myself, I do make resolutions. I’m not always successful in bringing those resolutions fully to bear but … I try. This year, I’ve come up with a resolution that I’m pretty excited about but I know me and I know that that kind of excitement doesn’t always last. Still … I’m gonna give it a try.
I posted these photos on my Instagram, Facebook and Twitter accounts and I asked people to pick their fave journal cover of the three. My plan, my resolution, is to physically write — with actual pen and ink — in a journal every single day of 2012. I’m not planning on writing pages and pages per day but my plan is to jot something down every day … maybe I’ll tape in ticket stubs, cards, notes, photos as the year unfolds … maybe not. True story, Pink is the new Blog was born from a journal project like this. Back in grad school, while I took a creative writing class on Postmodern Writing, I carried around with me (every day for the entire semester) a blank book so that I could jot down things that inspired me on a daily basis. That book turned into my final project for the class. That journal project, for which I earned an A, inspired me to start an “online journal” that I would publish on a daily basis for a full year. That first year turned into a second year, and that “online journal” eventually evolved into Pink is the new Blog. This time around, my goal is to focus on the actual practice of WRITING. I can’t even remember the last time I even used a pen for any significant amount of time. Yes, I’ve addressed envelopes, written out checks, signed cards but … in this age of computers and mobile phones, I don’t write anymore — ever. As a result, my penmanship is embarrassingly bad. David has to write out the text of the cards we give to people because my writing is basically illegible … and I want to remedy that.
Ideally, I would love to carry my book with me EVERYWHERE, EVERYDAY — just like I did in grad school — but that is an unlikely goal for me to accomplish. Instead, I plan to carry my book with me as many places as I can with the concerted effort to WRITE in it it every single day. I can’t promise I’ll be 100% successful but I can make the promise — to myself — that I will keep this 2012 resolution in mind and will do my very best to successfully complete my 2012 Book. Despite what they say about “the best laid plans”, I think I can keep this resolution all year long … fingers crossed ;) Incidentally, the vast majority of people who responded chose the brown leather book as their fave, with the detailed maroon book coming in second and the red book in third. So … I think the brown leather book will be my 2012 Book.
So yeah … that is one of the resolutions that I have made for 2012. Have any of y’all made any resolutions? What do YOU hope to accomplish in the coming new year?
Tonight, I will be heading out to see The Iron Lady (a film that has pushed back the publication of my Fave Movies of 2011 list because I wanted to see if it will make the cut) and then later on, I’m seeing my FINAL concert of 2011 … Matthew Sweet at the Echo. Sweet will be performing his classic album Girlfriend in full, and I’m excited!! Have a great Friday y’all … the last one of the year. It’s the weekend … and a big weekend at that. Have fun and BE SAFE!! <3
